Pros and Cons of Distilled Water for Dogs

Pros:

  • Purity: Distilled water is free from contaminants, toxins, bacteria and chemicals like chlorine and fluoride found in tap water. It’s 100% pure water.
If you live in an area where the water supply is questionable, distilled water could be a cleaner option as your dog drinking water.
  • Reduced Contaminants: Water sources like well water, ocean water and even some bottled waters can have harmful substances.
Distilled water removes most of these potential contaminants – some dogs benefits from this when they have weakened immune system or underlying health issues.

Cons:

  • Lack of Minerals: One of the biggest cons is that distilled water lacks essential minerals like calcium and magnesium which are good for your dog’s health. Over time giving your dog distilled water consistently may lead to deficiencies which can affect their bones, teeth and overall well being.
  • Increased Thirst: Because distilled water is stripped of its mineral content it can affect your dog’s body in a way that makes them thirsty.
This can lead to increased water intake and while staying hydrated is good, an abnormal increase in thirst can disrupt their body’s natural balance.
  • Acidity: Some studies suggest that distilled water is more acidic than other types of water. In some cases this acidity can irritate a dog’s stomach and cause gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea.

Why Distilled Water May Not Be Good for Dogs

Water Is More Than Just A Liquid

Dogs like humans need balanced intake of nutrients. Water is more than just a liquid to quench their thirst – it’s a delivery vehicle for those essential minerals that support their immune system, bone health and other bodily functions.
